Choosing a Route

How do you compare the money and effort of each disposal route?

Short answer: Estimate what the item would earn as scrap, subtract your time, fuel and any fees, then compare that with the free or low-cost alternatives such as a council collection or drop-off, because for light or low-value items the effort rarely justifies selling, while for heavy items or valuable metals selling usually returns the most for relatively little extra work.

Work out the likely value

Weigh or estimate the item and check a current price for its metal, so you have a realistic figure rather than a hope.

Count your costs

Fuel, time, the cost of hiring a trailer and any tip fees all reduce what selling returns, and they count against the other routes too.

Choose the route with the best net result

Sometimes that is the highest payment, and sometimes it is the least hassle at no cost, and both are reasonable answers.
